Kings 19

Kings Chapter 19 KJV

Jezebel threatening Elijah's life for having slain Baal's prophets, he fleeth to Beer-sheba. 4In the wilderness he groweth weary of life, but being twice strengthened by food brought him by an angel, he reacheth Horeb after having fasted forty days and forty nights. 9At Horeb God appeareth unto him, and commissioneth him to anoint Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha. 19He meeteth Elisha, who taking leave of his friends followeth him.
And Ahab told Jezebel 1all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, 1So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by 2to morrow about this time.
And when he saw that, 1he arose, and went for his life, and came to 2Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
¶ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and 1sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested afor himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
And 1as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
And he looked, and, behold, there was 1a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his ahead. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; 1because the journey is too great for thee.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the 1strength of that meat 2forty days and forty nights unto 3Horeb the mount of God.
¶ And he came thither unto 1a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, 2What doest thou here, Elijah?
And he said, I have been 1very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for 2the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and 3I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
And he said, Go forth, and 1stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, 2the Lord passed by, and 3a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but 4the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire 1a still small voice.
And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he 1wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, 2What doest thou here, Elijah?
And he said, 1I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the 1wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, 2anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
And 1Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and aElisha the son of Shaphat of 2Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth 1the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from 2the sword of Jehu shall 3Elisha slay.
Yet aI have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not 1kissed him.
¶ So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and 1he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his 2mantle upon him.
And he 1left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, aGo back again: for what have I done to thee?
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and 1boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and 2gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and 3went after Elijah, and 4ministered unto him.
