Eliphaz reproveth Job for want of religious trust: he remindeth him that God's judgments are not for the righteous, but for the wicked. His fearful vision, designed to humble the vain opinion of man's excellency in the sight of his Maker.
1THEN Eliphaz the Temanite 2answered and said,
if we assay ato commune with thee, wilt thou 1be grieved? but bwho can withhold himself from speaking?
Behold, 1thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened athe feeble knees.
But now 1it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
is not this 1thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
1Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
Even as I have seen, 1they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
By the blast of God they perish, and aby the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the 1teeth of the young lions, are broken.
The 1old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.
1Now a thing was asecretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
In 1thoughts from the visions of the night, when 2deep sleep falleth on men,
1Fear acame upon me, and trembling, which made ball my bones to shake.
Then a 1spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, athere was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
Shall 1mortal man be more just athan God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
Behold, 1he put no trust in his servants; aand his angels he charged with folly:
How much less in them that dwell in 1houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before 2the moth?
They are adestroyed from morning to evening: they 1perish for ever without any regarding it.
Doth not 1their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even 2without wisdom.
